Political Risk Analysis and Political Stakeholder Engagement
- Political Stakeholder Engagement: We helped a Fortune 50 client understand and plan to manage political risks in a sensitive, and very public, interaction with a government body regarding a proposed investment. The government had made a public threat of punishment if our client did not follow the government’s preferred approach. Unfortunately, that approach was economically infeasible; the client needed to either call the government’s bluff or abandon the project. By delving into the government’s goals and needs, and who the key officials were, we helped our client realize that the threat could be mitigated through proper engagement of certain parts of the government. In the end, the government backed down and the investment was approved on terms favorable to our client.
- Political Risk and Market Entry: Our experience and expertise in political analysis, in conjunction with Strategic Gaming, helped an oil and gas client understand the complex dynamics involved in pursuing investment in a country that posed political and public relations risks. The study helped the client understand the nature and depth of the risks and the signposts that would mean reduced risks and a more attractive investment environment in the future.
- Political Analysis and Export Strategy: We used Strategic Gaming to help an oil and gas company unravel a set of complex oil export issues that involved seven governments and at least five other oil and gas companies. The work showed the need for a re-prioritization of the client’s stakeholder engagement efforts and export foci. The study demonstrated which of the client’s alternatives could avoid marginalization by other stakeholders and how the client could best produce a win-win with certain other key companies and particular governments. With the right focus, implementation of the action plan saved hundreds of millions of dollars in value.
